The 58.03 square mile city of Augusta is the capital of Maine and is home to a population of nearly 20,000 people. The area was first settled in by English settlers from the Plymouth Colony and called it Cushnoc which is Indian for “head of tide”. Cushnoc was incorporated as a city in 1797 and was named Augusta, after the daughter of Henry Dearborn, the first US Marshal for the District of Maine. The State House, made from Maine granite, is the most popular architecture in the city and features a 180-foot dome. Just adjacent to the State House is the Maine State Museum, is another popular attraction. Many tourists also love dropping by the Old Fort Western, which is the oldest surviving fort in the entire country and was built in 1754. Other noteworthy places to visit in Augusta include the Children’s Discovery Museum, The Governor Hill Mansion, Capitol Park and the Pine Tree State Arboretum.
