Brainerd, one of the largest cities in Minnesota, is home to around 13,500 residents. It was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe until European settlers came in 1805. In modern times, the city has been developed into a commercial and residential area and occupies both sides of the Mississipi River although most of it is located in the eastern side. Brainerd is also a major tourist destination mainly because of the Brainerd International Raceway, which hosts several races and a national drag racing meet every August.
