The Field Museum of Natural History was established in 1893. There is more than just looking at exhibits here. Families and scout sleepovers with the dinosaurs are available, along with The Great Fossil Hunt for grades 3-5 and 6-8 and then there is Dino Camp for families. There is a DNA residency course for high school students that meet the requirements on the museum’s website each year. There is also an opportunity to watch some of Hollywood’s best blockbuster movies at the Music Box Theatre and discuss the science behind the movie with scientists and researchers.
What the museum's claim to fame is their acquisition of “Sue,” the Tyrannosaurus rex that was found by Susan Hendrickson and an ownership dispute ensued. She was found on reservation land that was held in trust by the U.S. Government for a rancher that was part Sioux Indian. That took about five years in court. With the help of McDonald’s Corporation, the Walt Disney World Resort, and private individuals, it took almost $8.4 million for the Field Museum of Natural History to give “Sue” a permanent home, allow researchers to study her to find answers and be able to let museum visitors see her on display.
