The city of Cumberland was once called Queen City as it had been the second largest city in Maryland. The area is where the mid-18th century Fort Cumberland is located thus giving it a major historical significance. The city was named by its English colonists after Prince William, the Duke of Cumberland. In the 19th century, the area became an industrial center mostly because of its strategic location as a key road, railroad and canal junction.
