The once desert area of Glendale was founded by William John Murphy, who was the one in charge for building the 40-mile Arizona Canal in order to bring water into the land, back in 1885. Murphy became deep in debt because of the project and decided to sell land and water rights and also built the 18-mile Grand Avenue road that made the town more accessible from Phoenix. Today, the city of Glendale is home to more than 220,000 residents and a number of notable attractions, many of which are added into the National Register of Historic Places. Among the most popular destinations include the Beet Sugar Factory Building, which was responsible for the growth of the town in 1906, First National Bank of Glendale, Pratt’s Feed and Supply and many more. Glendale is also home to two major venues for sports events: the University of Phoenix Stadium and the Gila River Arena.
