Established in 1916, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was originally called the Hawaii National Park before it was split from the Haleakala National Park in 1961. Considered as a World Heritage Site in 1987, the 323,431-acre national park is home to Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and Mauna Loa, the most massive subaerial volcano in the world.

The volcano started to become a tourist attraction back in the 1840s and more than half of its area provides its nearly 1.7 million annual visitors with several opportunities for unusual hiking and camping. The park is also home to a number of National Register of Historic Places listings including the Whitney Seismograph Vault No. 29, 1790 Footprints, Ainahou Ranch, Ainapo Trail, Kilauea Crater, Puna-Ka’u Historic District and Wilkes Campsite. The Volcano House can also be found here and is the only hotel or restaurant located within the national park’s premises.
