Hiilawe Falls
With a drop of around 1,450 feet, the Hiilawe Waterfall is considered as one of the tallest and most powerful waterfalls in the state of Hawaii. Its main drop comes at a height of around 1,201 feet in goes into the Waipio Valley on Lalakea stream.
Hiking to the waterfall from the Waipio Valley is not recommended as it passes through private lands. The only hiking that can legally be done by visitors is through the beach and then hiking up the Mulawai trail. Horseback and wagon tours are also being allowed to hold tours around the valley which will allow you to get a closer look at the infamous waterfall.
Unfortunately, the Hiilawe waterfall dries up sometimes as the Lalakea stream above it has been diverted for irrigation purposes. From the floor of the Waipio Valley, the waterfall can become barely visible to totally dry even during the wet spring season in March.
