Rainbow Falls
A part of the Hawaii State Parks, visiting and seeing the 80-foot tall, 100-foot wide Rainbow Falls in Hilo can be done for free. Rainbow Falls, or Waianuenue Falls, is where the Wailuku River rushes to a large pool right below. The falls is very accessible and can be viewed very easily from the viewing platform inside the Wailuku River State Park.
Rainbow Falls was named so because during sunny mornings, rainbows become visible in the mist that gets thrown up from the waterfall. The waterfall itself gushes into a turquoise colored pool and is surrounded by a dense tropical rainforest, making it look like a scene from a postcard.
Other points of interest can be found from Rainbow Falls, including Peepee Falls which can be seen after traveling further upland the Wailuku River. While all of these bodies of water look very tempting to swim in, it must be noted that neither of them are safe to do such an activity.
