Shangri La
The Shangri La is the name used to refer to the Islamic-style mansion that was built by heiress Doris Duke just outside of Honolulu. The construction of the area first started in 1937 and, for 60 years after that, became home to several artifacts that were commissioned and collected by Duke. Her house, which has a collection of around 2,500 objects, is now open for public viewing as the Shangri La Center for Islamic Arts and Culture.
A tour around Shangri La starts at the Honolulu Museum of Art and the tickets have to be bought in advance. The two and a-half hour tour include viewing the main house and other parts of the house such as the Damascus Room, Foyer, Entry Courtyard, Living Room, Mughal Garden and many more.
It should be noted that driving to or parking on-site at the Shangri La or the nearby residential area is strictly prohibited.
