Waikiki Aquarium
The second oldest public aquarium in the United States, founded in 1904, is the Waikiki Aquarium which can be found in Honolulu, Hawaii. With the facility built right next to a living coral reef, the aquarium serves as home to more than 3,500 organisms across 490 species of marine plants and animals.
The present location of the Waikiki Aquarium sits on a 2.5-acre piece of land just south of the original site. The facility was the first to develop a way to display living Pacific corals back in 1978. The aquarium was also the first to have the blacktip reef sharks, broadclub cuttlefish and giant clam in its exhibits. Due to its numerous achievements, the Waikiki Aquarium has received several awards and recognitions over the years.
The Waikiki Aquarium attracts more than 330,000 visitors every year and over 30,000 school children participate in its educational programs and activities each year.
