The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
The Museum Of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) was established in 1900 after the Houston Public School Art League dedicated the land for the museum in 1917.
The first building, the Caroline Wiess Law Building, opened in 1924. Besides containing exhibits of Asian, African, Islamic, Native American, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, and Modern and Contemporary art, this part of the museum accommodates the Kinder Foundation Education Center, Hirsch Library, and Brown Auditorium Theater. The Audrey Jones Beck Building, opened in 2000, contains ancient art, European art, photography, prints and drawings, and American art and is where the shop and café are located. Between these two buildings, they make up the two main galleries of the museum and are connected by a tunnel.
The Cullen Sculpture Garden exhibits 20th- and 21st-century sculptures. Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens contain the former home of Ima Hogg and Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center. The Rienzi house displays a collection of European art. The Glassell School of Art offers art courses and the core program offers postgraduate residencies. The Kinder Foundation Education Center is a great place to find out information on what is in the museum. There are two libraries, Hirsch Library, and Powell Library, on campus. The Works on Paper Study Center is where the surplus of art on paper can be viewed.
There are programs for adults, including Lectures, Performances, and book clubs. Programs for families include Homeschool programs and resources and programs in the community. There is also internship and fellowship programs for College and University students.
