Disney's Magic Kingdom is the first Disney theme park to arrive in Bay Lake, Florida. The park opened October 1, 1971. Walt Disney passed away prior to the parks opening but he was very involved in the planning process of this park. Disney's Magic Kingdom sits on 107 acres. In 2014, the park had 19.33 million guests, and it was the most visited theme park in the world, according to the Themed Entertainment Association. 2014.
There are thrill rides like Splash Mountain that will tell you a story as you travel in a hollow log, but beware, you will get wet on this ride. There is an interactive role-playing game in the park called “Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom,” where you can join in the search by becoming an apprentice sorcerer in the role-playing game. Who knows, the game could take you places throughout the park you may not have had the chance to see otherwise.
One of the interesting things about this park is that Walt Disney did not want ‘cast members’ of the park to be a distraction for the guests when they had to travel outside of their areas of employment on breaks or off-times. As a result, when Disney began building the Magic Kingdom in 1967, they implemented “utilidors” (the combination of the words utility and corridor). These are not underground tunnels. Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, Inc., the engineering and designing subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, built these corridors and then built the Magic Kingdom over them, giving the park an elevation of 107 feet because of Florida's already high water table.
