The sixth largest city in Kansas is home to a population of around 87,000. It was the New England Emigrant Aid Company that founded this college town back in 1854 and named it after Amos Adams Lawrence who offered financial aid and support. At the start, Lawrence was a center of politics in the state but later, its other industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and education improved. It is currently home to the University of Kansas, founded in 1866, and Haskell Indian Nations University, founded in 1884. Lawrence also offers a number of attractions to its visitors. The South Park is among the largest in the city and was originally made up of four parks: Lafayette, Hamilton, Washington and Franklin Parks. Another beautiful park to visit in Lawrence is the Centennial Park which was built in 1954, during the city’s 100th anniversary. Also popular in the area are the Spencer Museum of Art, Clinton State Park, Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, Massachusetts Street and several others.
