Mason City had been originally called Shibboleth when it was used as a summer home for natives of the Sioux and Winnebago areas. The town was also called under several other names including Masonic Grove and Masonville until it was finally called Mason City in 1855, after Mason Long, the founder’s son. The city is often nicknamed as the River City as its growth was always centered on the Winnebago River. The city is best known for the number of Prairie School architecture found in the area, the largest of any city in the entire state. At present, there are around 32 houses and a commercial building built in this architectural style and 17 of these establishments are already on the National Register of Historic Places. Among the best places to see in the area are the Dr. G.C. Stockman House and the Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank Buildings. The Charles H. MacNider Museum, Music Man Square and Meredith Wilson Boyhood Home are also worth visiting.
