Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium, located in Newport, Oregon, is a premier marine science education facility and one of the top aquariums in the United States. Opened in 1992, the aquarium is renowned for its dedication to marine conservation and its engaging, educational exhibits that highlight the diverse marine life of the Oregon coast and the broader Pacific Ocean. Spanning over 23 acres, the facility provides both indoor and outdoor exhibits, offering visitors an immersive experience of the world of marine life.
One of the aquarium's most popular attractions is the "Passages of the Deep" exhibit, where visitors can walk through underwater tunnels and observe a variety of marine species, including sharks, rays, and large schools of fish, in a series of interconnected tanks that replicate different ocean environments. The "Rocky Shores" exhibit showcases the rugged coastal habitats of the Pacific Northwest, featuring tide pools with starfish, anemones, and sea urchins, as well as playful sea otters. The "Coastal Waters" exhibit includes a large open-air aviary where visitors can see seabirds like puffins and murres up close.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is also known for its role in marine wildlife rehabilitation and conservation. The facility often cares for injured or stranded marine animals, including sea turtles and seals, to release them back into the wild. Educational programs are a cornerstone of the aquarium's mission, offering a variety of interactive experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters, and educational camps for children. These programs aim to inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of marine ecosystems and the importance of conservation.
Open year-round, the Oregon Coast Aquarium provides a dynamic and family-friendly destination for anyone interested in marine life and environmental stewardship. Seasonal events and rotating exhibits ensure there is always something new to discover, making it a must-visit attraction on the Oregon coast.
