The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is an art museum that holds three facilities around Seattle. The museum opened on January 20, 2007. It is hard to determine how many visitors there are to this museum because there is free admission to different areas of the museum.
SAM’s collection includes Ancient American pieces such as the 'ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT OF A MAYA LORD (?), CA. 600 – 900, MAYA' and 'TEXTILE FRAGMENT: SHAMAN FIGURES, 750-200 B.C., PERUVIAN, NORTH COAST, WARI, CASMA.' The Asian Art Museum at Volunteer Park contains Asian pieces ‘JADE CARVING INSCRIBED WITH POEM, 1736 – 1795, CHINESE’ and ‘WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO), EARLY 17TH CENTURY, ATTRIBUTED TO HON'AMI KOETSU, JAPANESE, 1558 – 1637. The Olympic Sculpture Park holds a sculpture modeled on the nine-year-old Chinese girl referenced to Echo, the mountain nymph of Greek mythology. The Sculpture of this head is t 45 ft. 11 in. tall.
SAM has free admission days on the first Thursday of each month to everyone and on the first Friday of the month, SAM is free to seniors. Of course, SAM is free to members and they are free to children twelve and under. The Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library is located in SAM’s downtown location, on First Avenue, on the fifth floor. The Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) is located in SAM’s original building since 1994, in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill, and contains the McCaw Foundation Library of Asian Art that was founded in 1933. Admission to the 9-acre Olympic Sculpture Park, on the waterfront, is free.
